What is Individual Health Insurance?

Private cover, built around you

Individual Health Insurance, also known as Private Medical Insurance (PMI), is cover for one person, giving you access to private diagnosis and treatment when you need it. Rather than waiting on an NHS list, you’re seen quickly, often at a hospital and time that suits you.

It isn’t a replacement for the NHS. Think of it as a fast lane for the things private cover does well – diagnostics, consultants, cancer treatment, surgery – while the NHS continues to handle emergencies, maternity and long-term chronic care.

Every policy is built from a core of standard cover plus optional extras, so it can be shaped around exactly what matters to you.

Every insurer prices risk differently, and premiums shift constantly. Rather than publishing generic figures that may not reflect your circumstances, we do the legwork for you.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use the NHS if I have private health insurance?

Yes — private cover works alongside the NHS, not instead of it. Emergencies, maternity and long-term chronic conditions remain NHS-handled; private cover speeds up everything else.

What's the difference between full medical underwriting and moratorium underwriting?

Full medical underwriting asks for your complete medical history upfront and excludes named conditions for the life of the policy. Moratorium underwriting skips the history-taking, but excludes anything you’ve had symptoms or treatment for in the past five years for the first two years of your policy — after which it may become eligible for cover.

Will my premium change over time?

It can, and this is exactly why comparing at renewal — which we do for you, free — often helps policyholders get better value.

Can I insure just myself, or does it have to include my family?

Individual cover is for one person. If you want to cover a partner or children under the same policy, see our Family Health Insurance page.

How much does this cost me?

Nothing — our comparison and advice service is completely free and independent. We’re paid by the insurer once you take out a policy, not by you.
