Who is Vitality?

Vitality health insurance (VitalityHealth) is one of the UK’s larger private medical insurers, known for building its policies around a rewards-based wellness programme alongside the usual private medical cover. If you like the idea of your everyday habits, gym visits, an Apple Watch, an annual health check, feeding into your policy, Vitality is one of the names worth putting on your shortlist.

Company background & ownership

VitalityHealth has been through a few changes of name and ownership over the years. It began life in 1994 as Standard Life Healthcare, became PruHealth in 2004 through a joint venture between Discovery and Prudential, and took on its current name, VitalityHealth, in November 2014 after Discovery bought out Prudential’s stake. Today it’s a proprietary insurer, meaning it’s owned by shareholders rather than being a mutual, and sits within Vitality Corporate Services, itself ultimately owned by Discovery Limited, a JSE-listed financial services group based in South Africa.

In the UK, Vitality is generally regarded as the third-largest health insurer by membership, with around 1.9 million members as of early 2025. That puts it comfortably among the handful of larger names in the private medical insurance market, alongside the other insurers whose plans we also compare.

What sets Vitality apart from a purely administrative point of view is how closely its wellness programme is woven into the policy itself. Members earn Vitality Points for healthy activity, using a wearable, going to the gym, completing an annual health review, which builds towards a status level (Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum). That status unlocks partner rewards and can act as a moderating factor on renewal pricing, though it’s worth being clear this isn’t a guaranteed discount; it influences how much a renewal might move, rather than fixing the premium itself.

Who is Vitality best for?

Vitality tends to suit people who are already fairly active, or who like the idea of a policy that actively rewards healthy habits rather than simply covering you when something goes wrong. If you’re comfortable wearing a fitness tracker, going to the gym, and having that feed into your renewal pricing and rewards, the Vitality Points system can add genuine extra value on top of the core medical cover. It also tends to suit people who value quick digital access to a GP and the ability to self-refer for physio or mental health support without waiting for an appointment, and who are comfortable with a guided or tiered hospital list rather than an entirely open choice of hospital.

It’s less likely to suit people managing an ongoing chronic condition, since that kind of long-term management sits outside what any of these policies typically cover, or people who’d rather not engage with a wellness or points-based system at all. That’s not a criticism of Vitality, it’s simply a reflection of the fact that private medical insurance is a personal decision, and the right fit depends entirely on your own health, habits and priorities. Another insurer on the market may well suit you better, and that’s precisely why Simple Search compares the whole market on your behalf rather than steering you towards any one provider.

Vitality health insurance plans

Personal Healthcare

Personal Healthcare is Vitality's flagship individual plan, and it works on a build-your-own basis. Every plan starts with Core Cover, which includes in-patient and day-patient treatment, comprehensive cancer cover, video GP access and self-referral for physio and talking therapies. From there, you choose which hospital list you want access to (Consultant Select, Local, Countrywide, or London Care) and set an outpatient limit, ranging from £500 up to unlimited. You can then add extras such as dental, optical, mental health or therapies cover on top. It's a genuinely flexible structure, which suits people who want to shape their cover around their own priorities and budget rather than choosing from a small number of fixed packages.

Health Lite

Health Lite is Vitality's more budget-focused option, aimed at people who want the reassurance of private medical cover without paying for the fuller range of benefits found in Personal Healthcare. It trims back some of the benefit levels to keep premiums lower, which can make sense if cost is the main driver and you're happy to accept a leaner set of benefits in exchange. As with any lighter-touch plan, it's worth checking the detail carefully against your own likely needs before assuming it's the cheaper like-for-like option.

Where this provider stands out

The Vitality rewards programme

Vitality's wellness programme is arguably its most distinctive feature. Members build up Vitality Points through healthy activity, wearable data, gym check-ins, annual health assessments, which feeds into a status level from Bronze through to Platinum. That status can unlock rewards from partner brands (things like an Apple Watch, a Garmin device, or gym discounts) and acts as a moderating factor at renewal. It won't appeal to everyone, but if you're someone who's already active or keen to be, it adds a tangible extra layer to the policy.

Weight-loss medication support

In February 2025, Vitality became the first UK health insurer to offer a discounted, medically supervised pathway to weight-loss medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro for members with a BMI of 35 or above, paired with dietitian coaching. It's a fairly new benefit in the market and reflects a broader shift towards insurers supporting weight management directly rather than just treating its consequences.

Self-referral for physio and mental health

Vitality lets members self-refer for up to 6 physiotherapy sessions and up to 8 Talking Therapies sessions a year without needing to see a GP first. For anyone who's experienced the friction of needing a referral before getting help, this can meaningfully speed up access to support, particularly for the kind of musculoskeletal or lower-level mental health needs a lot of people encounter.

Network & cost

Hospital network & where you'll be treated

Rather than working from one fixed hospital list, Vitality uses a tiered, guided-list model. Your default option is Consultant Select, which gives you access to a curated panel of around ten consultants per specialty at a defined set of hospitals, a structure designed to manage costs while still giving you a reasonable choice of specialist. If you'd like broader access, you can upgrade to Local, Countrywide, or London Care, which extends your choice of hospitals and consultants, up to and including all approved London hospitals and a UK-wide list under London Care. In practice, this means the hospitals and consultants available to you depend on which list you've chosen, so it's worth checking that your preferred hospital, or the specialists in your area, are actually included on the tier you're considering before you commit.

How much does Vitality cost?

There's no single price for Vitality health insurance, because premiums are worked out individually. The main factors are your age, where you live, your current health and lifestyle, the excess you choose (a higher excess brings the premium down), and the level of cover you pick, including whether you're covering dependants, which hospital list you choose, and any add-ons. At renewal, pricing moves with medical inflation and claims experience generally, and your Vitality Status can moderate the size of any increase, though it isn't a fixed or guaranteed discount. Because so much depends on your personal circumstances, the only reliable way to know what Vitality would actually cost you is to get a personalised quote, which is exactly what we can help with.

Making a claim

01

Speak to a Vitality GP by video, usually within about 48 hours, or self-refer directly for physiotherapy or talking therapies without needing to see a GP first.

02

Start and manage your claim online through the Care Hub or app, getting a pre-authorisation code before treatment goes ahead.

03

Attend your treatment – Vitality typically settles directly with the hospital, so in most cases you shouldn't need to pay upfront.

04

If you have paid for treatment yourself, submit your invoice and proof of payment for reimbursement, less any excess that applies.

Customer reviews & ratings

Vitality's product itself is well regarded by the independent ratings agencies that assess policy features rather than customer experience: it's held a Defaqto 5-star rating for its Personal Healthcare PMI Individual product continuously since 2012, Fairer Finance rates it 5-star for comprehensiveness, and it picked up a Moneyfacts 5-Star award in 2024. Where the picture becomes more mixed is on customer experience. Fairer Finance's customer-experience score for Vitality sits at a more moderate level, and review platforms don't tell a consistent story either, Trustpilot feedback is broadly positive, while Smart Money People shows a notably lower score, with recurring complaints about friction during the claims process. As with most insurers, it's worth reading a spread of recent reviews yourself rather than relying on any single score, since experiences can vary quite a bit depending on the type of claim and how it was handled.

Good to know

Vitality: frequently asked questions

Is Vitality a good health insurer?

Vitality's Personal Healthcare product has held a 5-star Defaqto rating continuously since 2012, reflecting strong policy benefits. Customer experience scores are more mixed, with Fairer Finance rating it moderately and review platforms varying, so it's worth comparing Vitality against other insurers for your specific needs before deciding.

Does Vitality cover pre-existing conditions?

Generally not straight away. Under moratorium underwriting, conditions from the last five years are excluded unless you go two years without symptoms or treatment. Full Medical Underwriting asks about your health upfront and confirms any exclusions from the start, giving more certainty but requiring more disclosure.

How does the Vitality rewards programme work?

Vitality members earn Vitality Points for healthy activity like gym visits, wearable data and health checks, building towards a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum status. This status unlocks partner rewards, such as discounts on fitness devices or gym membership, and can moderate the size of your renewal price increase, though it isn't a guaranteed discount.

Can I choose my own hospital with Vitality?

Yes, within limits. Vitality uses a tiered hospital list system rather than one open network, the default Consultant Select tier gives access to a curated panel of consultants, while Local, Countrywide and London Care tiers extend your choice further, up to UK-wide access under the top tier.

Does Vitality cover mental health treatment?

Yes, to a degree, as standard. Vitality includes up to 8 self-referred Talking Therapies sessions a year without needing a GP referral. For more extensive support, including in-patient or day-patient mental health treatment, you'd need the optional Mental Health Cover upgrade, which adds up to 28 days of each.
