Who is Aviva?

Aviva health insurance is one of the best-known names in UK private medical insurance, and it’s a policy we’re asked about often. As one of the largest composite insurers in the country, Aviva brings serious scale and financial stability to its health cover, alongside a flexible plan structure that lets you shape a policy around your own priorities and budget.

Company background & ownership

Aviva is one of the UK’s largest and longest-standing insurance groups, with a history that stretches back over three centuries to the Hand in Hand Fire & Life Insurance Society, founded in 1696. The modern company took shape in 2000, when Norwich Union and CGU merged to form CGNU plc, which was renamed Aviva in 2002. That lineage means Aviva carries genuine institutional weight in UK insurance, it isn’t a niche health specialist, but a full-line composite insurer offering life cover, general insurance, investments and retirement products alongside health.

Its dedicated health insurance arm has its own, slightly separate history. It began life in 1990 as Norwich Union Healthcare, before being rebranded Aviva Health Insurance in 2009 to bring it under the wider group identity. Today it sits as one part of a much larger business, headquartered in London and listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 100 constituent.

Because Aviva is publicly listed, it doesn’t have a single controlling shareholder, ownership is spread across a large number of institutional and individual investors, similar to most other listed UK insurers. In practical terms, that scale gives Aviva significant financial resources behind its health book, along with the infrastructure to invest in digital tools like its video GP service. It’s a fundamentally different kind of organisation to a smaller, health-only specialist, and that’s worth bearing in mind when weighing it against other providers, bigger isn’t automatically better, just different, and the right fit depends on what you value.

Who is Aviva best for?

Aviva tends to suit people who like the reassurance of a large, well-established insurer with real financial weight behind it, and who want a policy they can genuinely shape to fit their circumstances rather than picking off a shelf of fixed packages. If unlimited, bundled-in access to a 24/7 video GP service appeals to you, particularly the ability to get prescriptions delivered without a separate GP visit, Aviva’s Digital GP offering is a strong part of the package. It can also suit people who are comfortable spending a bit of time working through the hospital-list options with an adviser to get the balance of cost and choice right, rather than wanting a single, simple tier to pick from.

As with every insurer we work with, though, Aviva won’t be the right answer for everyone. If unlimited overseas cover matters to you, or you want broader chronic-condition support beyond cancer, another provider on the market may suit you better. That’s really the whole point of working with Simple Search, we compare Aviva against Vitality, AXA Health, Bupa, The Exeter, Freedom Health Insurance and WPA on your specific circumstances, rather than defaulting to any one insurer, so you end up with the policy that actually fits you.

Aviva health insurance plans

Expert Select

Expert Select is Aviva's guided treatment pathway rather than a fixed list of hospitals. Instead of choosing a specialist and hospital yourself, Aviva helps match you to an appropriate consultant and facility for your particular condition. Because you're giving up some of that choice, it's typically the most affordable of Aviva's hospital-access options, a good fit if keeping premiums down matters more to you than picking your own consultant.

Key, Extended, Signature and Trust hospital lists

Moving up from Expert Select, the Key list gives you access to a standard network of around 200 mainstream private hospitals across the UK, covering most major private hospital groups. The Extended list builds on this by adding further hospitals, particularly useful if you're in or around London and want a wider choice of facilities there. Signature and Trust list options sit alongside these, offering different combinations of hospital access that can be used to fine-tune your premium, for example, by including or excluding certain higher-cost London hospitals. An adviser can talk you through which list makes sense based on where you live and where you'd realistically want to be treated.

Diagnostics insurance

Alongside its full PMI product, Aviva also offers a standalone Diagnostics Insurance policy. This is a narrower product focused purely on getting you seen quickly, covering specialist consultations and diagnostic tests to help identify what's wrong. It doesn't fund any subsequent treatment once a diagnosis is made; cover ends at that point. It can suit people who mainly want to avoid NHS waiting times for diagnosis, without paying for full treatment cover on top.

What's covered

  • Specialist consultations and treatment
  • Diagnostic tests (scans, imaging and pathology)
  • In-patient and day-patient hospital charges
  • Full cancer cover at all stages under the 'Cancer Pledge', diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and dedicated aftercare and monitoring
  • Outpatient mental health treatment up to £2,000 a year (covering conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and OCD, with a GP referral required)
  • Surgical dental procedures carried out in hospital, covered as standard even without the optional dental add-on
  • Access to unlimited 24/7 Digital GP video consultations as part of every policy

Optional extras & add-ons

  • Dental and optical cover – a contribution towards glasses, lenses and routine dental treatment, plus accident dental cover
  • Mental health upgrade – adds in-patient and day-patient mental health cover on top of the standard £2,000 outpatient benefit
  • Other treatments and therapies – GP-referred physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture and GP minor surgery
  • Extended hospital list upgrade – widens your hospital access beyond your chosen base list
  • Protected No Claim Discount – keeps your no-claims discount level intact even after you've made a claim
  • Reduce-cover options – such as a Six Week/NHS option, reduced outpatient limits, a higher excess or a cheaper hospital list, all of which can bring the premium down if a leaner policy suits you better

Where this provider stands out

The Cancer Pledge

Aviva's policy generally excludes chronic conditions that need ongoing management, but cancer is treated as a standing exception to that rule. Under the Cancer Pledge, cover applies at every stage of a cancer diagnosis, from diagnosis itself through chemotherapy and radiotherapy to dedicated aftercare and ongoing monitoring. For many people, comprehensive cancer cover is one of the main reasons for taking out PMI in the first place, so having it built in as standard, rather than as an add-on, is worth noting.

Unlimited digital GP access

Every Aviva policyholder gets access to Aviva Digital GP, offering unlimited 24/7 video consultations with a GP at no extra cost. Appointments are generally available quickly, you can choose your GP and rebook the same one within six months, and repeat NHS prescriptions can be ordered and delivered to your home free of charge. It's available across Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, and while you're abroad, and dependants under 16 can be added to your cover too.

Modular hospital-list system

Rather than locking you into one of a handful of fixed tiers, Aviva's hospital-list structure, Expert Select, Key, Extended, Signature and Trust, lets you trade network breadth for premium in a fairly granular way. If you're relaxed about where you're treated, Expert Select can bring costs down; if you want the widest possible choice, particularly in London, the Extended or Signature options give you that flexibility. It's a genuinely different way of shaping a policy compared with some rivals' simpler tiered structures.

Network & cost

Hospital network & where you'll be treated

Aviva doesn't work from a single, fixed hospital network in the way some insurers do. Instead, where you can be treated depends entirely on the hospital-list option you choose when you take out the policy. At the lower end, Expert Select uses a guided pathway, where Aviva helps identify an appropriate specialist and facility for your condition rather than giving you a list to choose from yourself. Moving up, the Key list opens up a standard network of roughly 200 mainstream private hospitals, and the Extended, Signature and Trust options add further choice on top, particularly around Greater London. Taken together across all its list options, Aviva's reach extends to several hundred hospitals nationally, spanning the main private hospital groups and NHS private patient units. The right choice really depends on where you live, whether you're likely to want treatment in London specifically, and how much you value having the widest possible choice versus keeping your premium down.

How much does Aviva cost?

There's no single price for Aviva health insurance, your premium is built up from several factors. Age and where you live both matter, since private healthcare costs vary significantly by region. Your claims history affects both your premium and your no-claims discount level, and the cover you choose has a big impact too, including which hospital list you pick, whether you add optional extras like dental, optical or mental health upgrades, and whether you're insuring just yourself or your whole family. Your excess also plays a part, choosing a higher excess brings the premium down. Aviva also offers certain discounts that can affect the final price, including an existing-customer or multi-product discount and a health-related discount subject to eligibility. Because there are so many moving parts, the only reliable way to know what Aviva would actually cost you is to get a personalised quote, which is exactly what we can help with.

Making a claim

01

See your GP. Get a referral, ideally an 'open referral' that names the treatment you need rather than a specific specialist or hospital, giving you more flexibility in where you go.

02

Contact Aviva before any tests or treatment. Get in touch via your MyAviva account or by phone to confirm your cover and get pre-authorisation, treatment generally can't be billed to Aviva without this step.

03

Receive your authorisation decision. Aviva aims to confirm what's approved straightaway, so you know what's covered before you go ahead.

04

Update Aviva if further treatment is recommended. If your specialist suggests treatment beyond what was originally authorised, let Aviva know so they can review cover for it.

05

Aviva settles the bill directly. Authorised costs are paid straight to the hospital or provider, so in most cases you shouldn't need to pay upfront and claim the money back.

Customer reviews & ratings

Aviva's Healthier Solutions policy holds a 5-star Defaqto rating in its top configuration, reflecting a strong overall package of benefits when fully specified. It also scored well, among the joint-highest, in an independent Fairer Finance customer-experience index covering PMI providers, which looks at how well insurers treat their customers day to day. Which?'s 2026 survey of private health insurance customers placed Aviva around the middle of the pack for overall satisfaction, some way off the top-rated providers among the seven assessed, which is worth factoring in alongside the more product-focused ratings above. On Trustpilot, Aviva's overall score is generally strong, but it's important to note that this reflects reviews across Aviva's whole business, car, home, life and health insurance together, rather than health insurance specifically, so it's best read as a general reputation signal rather than a precise measure of the PMI experience alone.

Good to know

Aviva: frequently asked questions

Does Aviva health insurance cover cancer treatment?

Yes. Aviva covers cancer at every stage under its Cancer Pledge, including diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and dedicated aftercare and monitoring. This is a specific, stated exception to the policy's general exclusion of chronic conditions, so you don't need to add any extra cover to get comprehensive cancer support as standard.

Does Aviva private health insurance include GP appointments?

Yes. Every Aviva policyholder gets access to Aviva Digital GP, offering unlimited 24/7 video consultations at no extra cost, with the option to rebook the same GP and get repeat NHS prescriptions delivered to your home for free. It's available across GB, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and while abroad.

Does Aviva health insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Not automatically. Under moratorium underwriting, a pre-existing condition can become covered after two years without symptoms or treatment, provided you take out cover on that basis. Under full medical underwriting, it depends on how Aviva assesses your specific health history at outset.

Which hospitals can I use with Aviva health insurance?

It depends on the hospital-list option you choose. Expert Select uses a guided pathway to match you with an appropriate specialist and facility, while the Key, Extended, Signature and Trust lists give access to progressively wider networks, covering several hundred hospitals nationally when combined, with extra choice available around London.

Does Aviva cover private health insurance abroad?

No. Aviva's individual PMI cover is restricted to treatment within the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, with no international or overseas cover included. If treatment abroad is important to you, it's worth discussing alternative providers with an adviser.
