Who is Bupa?

Bupa health insurance is one of the most recognised names in UK private medical insurance, and it’s often the first insurer people think of when they start comparing cover. Founded in 1947, Bupa has grown into the UK’s largest private medical insurer by customer numbers, with a plan structure, hospital network and digital GP service designed to cover you at every stage, from a first consultation through to treatment and aftercare.

Company background & ownership

Bupa began life in 1947 as the British United Provident Association, created by merging a number of regional provident associations into a single national body. Nearly eighty years on, it’s grown into an international healthcare group, but its UK private medical insurance business remains one of its best-known and largest operations, headquartered in London.

Structurally, Bupa is unusual among household-name insurers: it’s a company limited by guarantee with no shareholders. That means there’s no dividend to pay out to investors. Bupa’s own position is that profits are reinvested into providing healthcare, rather than distributed externally. Whether that structure translates into better value for any individual policyholder is something worth weighing up for yourself, but it is a genuinely different ownership model to most of the market.

Perhaps the most distinctive thing about Bupa, though, is that it doesn’t just insure private healthcare, it also delivers some of it directly. Alongside its insurance products, Bupa owns and operates a small number of UK hospitals, including the Cromwell Hospital in London and, following acquisitions in 2025, New Victoria Hospital and King Edward VII’s Hospital, also both in London. Most mainstream PMI insurers in the UK don’t own hospitals at all, so this is a meaningful point of difference in how Bupa’s business is put together, even if it only affects a portion of where its customers are actually treated.

Who is Bupa best for?

Bupa tends to suit people who value the reassurance of a very large, well-established insurer with a broad digital GP offering and a genuinely comprehensive cancer cover option. If the idea of an insurer that also owns and runs some of its own hospitals appeals to you, perhaps because you like the sense of a joined-up care pathway, Bupa is one of the few mainstream providers offering that. It can also suit people who want the flexibility of two clearly different tiers, so you can choose between paying more for full outpatient cover, or paying less and using the NHS or self-funding for diagnostics.

It won’t be the right fit for everyone. If budget is your main priority, or you want a policy that’s consistently topped independent satisfaction surveys, another insurer might suit you better. That’s exactly why we don’t sell Bupa in isolation. As independent advisers, our job is to compare Bupa against the rest of the market, including Vitality, AXA Health, Aviva, The Exeter, Freedom Health Insurance and WPA, and help you land on whichever one genuinely fits your health, your budget and your circumstances.

Bupa health insurance plans

Treatment and Care

This is Bupa's more affordable tier. It covers in-patient and day-patient treatment, but as standard it excludes outpatient consultations, tests and scans, the appointments you'd typically need on the way to a diagnosis. That can make it a sensible option if you're comfortable using the NHS or paying for diagnostics yourself, and mainly want cover in place for the treatment stage itself.

Comprehensive

This tier includes outpatient consultations, diagnostic tests and therapies such as physiotherapy as standard, alongside faster access to specialists. Because it covers the whole journey from first appointment through to treatment, it costs more than Treatment and Care, but it removes the need to fund the diagnostic stage separately.

What's covered

  • In-patient and day-patient hospital treatment (both tiers)
  • Outpatient consultations, diagnostic tests and therapies as standard on Comprehensive
  • Cancer cover, available as full Cancer Cover or a lower-cost NHS Cancer Cover Plus option
  • Mental health cover, covering a broad range of conditions as standard
  • 'Direct Access' to Bupa for certain symptoms (cancer, mental health, and muscle, bone or joint issues), letting eligible customers call Bupa directly rather than seeing a GP first
  • A dental allowance
  • An NHS cash benefit, paid if you choose to be treated on the NHS instead of claiming privately
  • 24/7 Anytime HealthLine nurse advice
  • Digital GP, nurse, physiotherapist and mental health practitioner appointments through the My Bupa app

Optional extras & add-ons

  • Hospital list choice: a wider list, including more London hospitals, is available at a higher premium
  • Excess options: choose an excess from £0 up to £500, payable once per policy year
  • Outpatient cover limit: on Comprehensive, you can choose a higher or unlimited outpatient limit for a higher premium
  • Cancer cover flexibility: included by default if you buy online, but it can be excluded if you buy by phone, which lowers the cost
  • Dental and optical extras: additional cover options are available, worth discussing with an adviser so you know exactly what's included for your budget

Where this provider stands out

Bupa's own hospitals

Bupa is unusual among mainstream UK PMI insurers in that it doesn't just pay for private treatment, it also owns and runs some of it. Cromwell Hospital, New Victoria Hospital and King Edward VII's Hospital, all in London, sit within what Bupa calls its 'Connected Care' hospital platform, spanning complex, secondary and routine elective care. For some customers, that direct link between insurer and provider is a point of reassurance.

Cancer cover with no time or cost limit

Bupa's full Cancer Cover option covers you from diagnosis through to aftercare, with no time limit and no financial limit on eligible treatment. It also doesn't take a family history of cancer into account when assessing your application, which can matter if cancer runs in your family. A cheaper NHS Cancer Cover Plus option is also available, covering private treatment only where the NHS can't provide timely care.

Direct Access to specialist symptom routes

For certain symptoms, cancer, mental health, and muscle, bone or joint issues, eligible Bupa customers can call Bupa directly rather than seeing a GP first. That can shave a step off the process of getting seen when time matters.

Network & cost

Hospital network & where you'll be treated

Bupa doesn't publish a single fixed number for its hospital network in the way some comparison tables might suggest. Instead, which hospitals and consultants you can use depends on the hospital list you choose when you take out cover, wider lists including more London hospitals cost more, and you check whether a specific hospital is recognised using Bupa's own online 'Finder' tool. On top of the wider network, Bupa also directly owns and runs a small number of hospitals in London, giving it a degree of control over some parts of the care pathway that most other mainstream insurers don't have. If having a particular hospital or consultant covered matters to you, it's always worth checking via the Finder tool, or asking an adviser to check for you, before you commit to a plan.

How much does Bupa cost?

There's no single price for Bupa health insurance, your premium is personal to you. It depends on factors including your age, where you live, whether you smoke, and general lifestyle, plus the choices you make within the plan: Comprehensive versus Treatment and Care, how wide a hospital list you want, the excess you're prepared to carry, the outpatient limit you choose on Comprehensive, and whether you keep cancer cover included. Because of all these moving parts, the only reliable way to know what Bupa would actually cost you is to get a personalised quote, ideally alongside quotes from other insurers, so you can see how the price and the cover compare side by side.

Making a claim

01

See a GP first, either your own NHS or private GP, or Bupa's digital GP through the My Bupa app, unless your symptoms qualify for Direct Access, in which case you call Bupa directly.

02

Ask for an Open Referral letter, which names the specialty you need rather than a specific consultant or hospital, giving you more flexibility in where you're treated.

03

Contact Bupa with your membership number, details of your symptoms, and the GP's recommendation.

04

Bupa checks your cover and, if everything's in order, issues a pre-authorisation code, viewable in the My Bupa app.

05

Book your appointment with a Bupa-recognised specialist or hospital and give them the pre-authorisation code, so Bupa can pay the provider directly rather than you having to claim money back.

Customer reviews & ratings

Bupa's product ratings and review-platform scores tell a broadly positive, if mixed, story. Bupa By You Comprehensive holds a strong Defaqto star rating (widely reported at 5-star), and a strong Fairer Finance product rating has also been reported for the Comprehensive plan, though the Treatment and Care tier scores lower on both. On customer review platforms such as Trustpilot, Bupa attracts a high volume of reviews and generally strong headline scores. That said, independent customer-satisfaction surveys haven't always told the same story, in some years Bupa has ranked around the middle of the pack for satisfaction among rated PMI providers, rather than at the very top, even while its review-platform scores stay strong. Taken together, it's a picture of an insurer with solid, well-rated products and a lot of satisfied customers, but not one that sweeps every independent measure.

Good to know

Bupa: frequently asked questions

Is Bupa the biggest health insurer in the UK?

Yes, Bupa is generally recognised as the UK's largest private medical insurer by customer numbers. That scale doesn't automatically make it the right choice for you personally, though, since price, cover levels and underwriting suit different people differently. It's worth comparing Bupa against other insurers before deciding.

What's the difference between Bupa Treatment and Care and Comprehensive?

Treatment and Care is the cheaper tier and excludes outpatient consultations, tests and scans as standard. Comprehensive includes these as standard, along with faster specialist access. Both cover in-patient and day-patient treatment, cancer cover, mental health cover and digital GP access as part of the core plan.

Does Bupa cover pre-existing conditions?

Not usually, though it depends on the underwriting type. Under full medical underwriting, pre-existing conditions are typically excluded from the outset. Under moratorium underwriting, no medical history is taken upfront, but a pre-existing condition generally only becomes claimable after a rolling period, typically two years, symptom-free.

How do I find out if my local hospital is covered by Bupa?

Bupa doesn't publish one single fixed hospital list. Instead, you check a specific hospital's status using Bupa's online 'Finder' tool, based on the hospital list you've chosen as part of your plan. An adviser can also check this for you before you commit to a policy.

Does Bupa health insurance cover cancer treatment?

Yes, cancer cover is included as standard on Bupa By You plans bought online, either as full Cancer Cover, with no time or financial limit on eligible treatment, or the lower-cost NHS Cancer Cover Plus, which covers private treatment only when the NHS can't provide timely care.
